Graham

This isnt intended as a critisism - but as an explanation for everyone else - (I have damaged Calista with the trailer supports in the past).

I think that the chocks which are shown in the drawings are a good way to support the boats on a trailer - the boats are lightly built and need to be properly supported if they are to be left there for any length of time.

I know it is possible to support the boats in different ways - but there is always a danger of twisting the hull over a longer period.

The supports are intended to go directly under the bulkheads. The main one with the cutouts goes under the main bulkhead. The aft one fits under the front bulkhead of the aft cabin.

If Theodora was not positioned exactly correctly (for and aft) - then she would not be correctly supported - hence the damage. I suppose the point I want to make for everyone else who is doing this for the first time is to highlight the need to support the boat under the bulkheads and not under the un-reinforced hull.

Positioning the boat on the trailer is also complicated by the need balance the boat on the trailer for and aft - and you have to move both boat and chocks forwards and backwards to get the noseweight just right. The noseweight is critical in my experience. If the nose weight is too light the boat can snake DRAMATICALLY at speeds as low as 25mph! It happened to me when I bought Calista and first loaded her onto a trailer.

The nose weight needs to be as heavy as the tow vehicle is designed to take. About 100 Kg for Landrovers if I remember correctly. You can fine tune the noseweight by moving heavy items around inside, but it needs to be roughly right to begin with.

Anyone loading an atalanta onto a trailer for the first time would be well advised to do some trial towing before setting off on a long journey.

If you search the Forum for "airborne" you will find a long and sometimes heated discussion (with pictures) about the extent to which Uffa Fox's design for the Atalanta may have originated from his wartime work on the airborne lifeboat (ALB )

Personally I think the ALB had a big influence, notably in the planing hull form and centre cockpit with fore and aft shelters. The ALB was also constructed from veneer strips, although in wartime they were "clinched" to ribbing with copper tacks. Later on, the US Air Force constructed ALBs with hulls made with a hot moulding technique similar to the process used for Atalantas and other Fairey Marine boats.

After the war, several people rescued ALBs and sailed them for enjoyment, notably Charles Currey, so there are definitely some strong links.

I can now report on the strips as I have just taken Aquilo out of the water. In terms of wear and tear, they seem to be fine. Because they are attached further away from the keels I think they are being stressed a lot less, and with its peculiar stretching it doesn't force itself onto the keel even when they invert as the keels are retrieved. Again they are easy to re-invert by hand. However for me they failed because, even though it seemed that I could see through them, when it came to the crunch, I couldn't see the trailer when I was retrieving Aquilo. This made for a very difficult retrieval. However the cause was slime on the inner surface of the strips which, in hindsight, would have been easy to wipe clean through the keel box. So in the future it may be possible to keep them clean enough to allow me to see how Aquilo is sitting on her trailer whilst still in the water. So I definitely going to keep them. In terms of performance they only occasionally let water into the cockpit, which is vastly better than not having any!

The brass plaques mounted on marble wedges have been presented for many years to trophy winners to keep when they returned the trophy and unmounted ones were presented to those boats that attended our 50th anniversary I believe. The brass is coated with a black surface which shows the brass when engraved. I would be interested to hear how these plaques look after being aboard for some time and then decide whether to use the plastic surface instead. We certainly need a quality item to record the wonderful efforts of those who made the relay such a stunning success...........Colin

Have tried to incorporate the Fairey Fisherman into our Association on several occasions in past years, each time the organiser seems to disappear. Although they are not lifting keels I am sure that the owners would appreciate a source if the sort of information we have about repairs etc and the gatherings of members would be an advantage to them. Though I am aware that we do not have the drawings.

I've updated and completed the relay log which John kindly administered whilst I was sailing the last leg and then on holiday.

Those involved may be particularly interested to read the last two days and see a couple of photos here: http://bit.ly/aC5ZUM

I would still like to add photos for all those boats that took part. I have none from:

Bluster
Scallywag
Ereina
Calista
Noggin
Aquilo II
Epenetus

They would be appreciated to make the log a complete record.

Did anyone take a photo of Alistair presenting the mementos?

End of Relay Bash

Around 20 people enjoyed a very "AOA style" afternoon and barbecue at Hamble Point last Saturday, 28th August, to celebrate completion of the Atalanta Round Britain Relay 2010.

We were all very aware of the huge commitment made by everyone taking part in the Relay. Due to the recent strong winds, several boats are still making their way back home, including A39 Epenetus, A9 Ereina and T10 Calista. The heroes of the day were the crew of A45 Tammy Norry: Ian, Graham and Graham's son Theo, who arrived at Hamble in the early hours after an overnight sail from Portland. At the start of the week Ian had towed A45 all the way from Yorkshire down to Portland to take part in the final leg of the Relay, but because the difficult weather had left other boats harbour-bound, it transpired that the final leg depended entirely on him. Just a year ago A45 was a shambolic wreck, after rolling down a 10ft bank while towing from Scotland, so today she is a true exemplar of the Atalanta's repairability and trailer-sailer features.

The afternoon started off with the traditional AOA challenge entitled "how do we put this tent up?", which involved several people milling around on the grassy bank overlooking Hamble Point. Eventually it became clear that the instructions I had carefully duplicated were for a different tent. Having discovered this, and re-counted the parts, Jane's son Tom and his daughter Kate quickly worked out how it should be assembled, after which things took shape rapidly.

We were not helped by the wind, however, and after trying different schemes for anchoring the tent, it was decided to move it "lock, stock and barrel" to a more sheltered spot. Unfortunately Mariana and I had left to do some barbecue shopping at this point, so if anyone has photos of this procedure I would be grateful if they will email them to me asap.

We returned around 18:00 to find that numbers had swelled with the addition of Mrs Currey and her son Alastair, and Graham's wife Ann with several children. The children became engrossed with Alastair in hunting down pebbles with holes, while Richard and Carol tended the barbecues and began producing a steady stream of sizzling sausages, chicken legs and lamb skewers.

Graham and I discussed how we might develop the Relay web log into a more detailed account of each leg, with more photographs, and produce a booklet to present to all the participants.

At length, when everyone had eaten, Colin gave a short speech expressing appreciation for the tremendous effort put in by all the boats taking part in the Relay. Alastair then recalled how A17 had started off the Relay three months earlier, on the day of his father's Memorial Service, and presented a small trophy to those present who had taken part in various sections. The other participants will need to attend the AGM in January to receive Alastair's trophies.

As darkness fell the time came to leave, and with everyone's help the tent was dismantled and packed away much faster than it had been put up. By this time the wind had dropped and it turned into one of those pleasant evenings when it's tempting to stay a little longer before bidding goodbye and heading for home.

Thanks to everyone who came, some like Dominic and Karen from far off, and those brought food to share, and to everyone for making this such an enjoyable occasion. Thanks are also due to MDL for allowing us to use the grassy area outside their offices, with such a splendid view over Hamble River and Southampton Water.

Having successfully towed Taka Maru to Norfolk, the inevitable setback occurred when I came to investigate the petrol tank - it looked great on the outside but inside turned out to be a mass of rust!

There are two solutions: a custom made replacement in stainless steel which will fit in the same place as the original, or a standard stainless or plastic tank to fit in the space beneath the original. The first is expensive, but simple to fit, while a standard tank is cheaper but it would involve "a lot of faffing about".

Has anyone with a petrol engine had experience of installing a standard plastic tank?

Thanks for any hints!
